Human Rights Policy
Purpose and application
This policy outlines Seven Miles Coffee Roasters (Seven Miles) commitment to respecting human rights and details on how we implement this commitment across our operations and supply chain. It provides the foundation for our approach to human rights and is rooted in our core value of ‘Act with Integrity’.
This policy applies to all Seven Miles locations across Australia.
This policy supports respecting human rights for all employees, suppliers, business partners and customers and the communities in which we operate.
Our Commitment
Seven Miles is committed to respecting human rights as stipulated by internationally recognised human rights frameworks:
- The International Bill of Human Rights
- The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
- The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work
- The United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs)
Seven Miles expects its suppliers and business partners to respect human rights along the value chain. In addition, we comply with all applicable laws relating to human rights, labour, workplace health and safety, and diversity.
How we implement our commitment
Recognising that our coffee beans, cocoa, and tea are sourced from diverse global regions, and acknowledging the inherent, industry-wide challenges in coffee supply chains, particularly at the grower level, we commit to leveraging our influence to engage with suppliers on human rights issues where they may exist. These may include, but are not limited to:
- Elimination of child labour
- Prevention of forced labour and human trafficking
- Promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment
- Poverty alleviation for farmers and workers
While we acknowledge the limits of our direct influence in coffee, cocoa and tea growing regions, Seven Miles will leverage its influence where possible to promote positive change.
In accordance with the UNGPs, we commit to respect human rights by:
- Opposing all forms of human rights abuses and modern slavery, including forced labour, child labour, bonded labour, and human trafficking in our operations and supply chain.
- Conducting risk assessments to identify potential human rights risks and impacts across our operations and value chain.
- Implementing a supplier self-assessment questionnaire for our coffee, tea, and cocoa suppliers.
- Engaging with higher-risk suppliers to enhance transparency and assess their human rights practices.
Raising concerns
We have established confidential channels for stakeholders to raise human rights concerns without fear of retaliation. We commit to investigating all reports promptly and providing appropriate remediation when necessary.
Reports should be made to our dedicated whistleblower email address whistleblower@sevenmiles.com.au, for further information about whistleblower, please reference our whistleblower policy.
