Cafe Profile: Black Circle

Black Circle Cafe

Even though they’re in one of Newcastle’s most prestigious locations, Black Circle is a cafe that’s not afraid to have it’s own opinion. From the punchy flavours on the menu, to the unashamedly full-bodied espresso – this isn’t just a tribute to alt-rock, but a lifestyle.

Walking in the doors for the first time, you can’t help but be impressed by the floor to ceiling wallpaper of classic album covers. According to the owner, Wal, “we went for something different. We threw it out on Facebook, everyone gave us 5 albums. We ended up with about 500 and had to cull it back to the 380 we have now”.

Even though we’re surrounded by the sights and sounds of Soundgarden & Nirvana – thankfully, the coffee tastes nothing like the 90’s.

The house blend, roasted by Seven Miles, is smooth, sweet & complex – and is beautifully made on their La Marzocco Linea Classic in custom black (seriously, it’s blacker than a Metallica album cover). The coffee options don’t stop there, you can grab a cold brew or a second espresso made with a changing selection of blends and single origins.

The menu also doesn’t mess around. Featuring signature items like the scrambled eggs with bacon, chorizo and chipotle sauce or the savoury French toast with bacon & maple syrup – the options are packed with big, delicious flavours.

For Wal & Bridget, Black Circle is the culmination of years of hard work. Wal started out as a baker before spending a long stint in the building industry. It was while working as a builder that Wal finally hit a turning point. “My body started to break-down a bit, and I thought…why not“ says Wal casually. They jumped straight in and started their first coffee business as a hole-in-the-wall espresso bar in Brisbane. After building this up, they moved back to Newcastle and discovered that a well known neighbourhood cafe in New Lambton was on the market.  This proved to be the right time to take a chance on something bigger.

Since taking over the business in 2015, the team have breathed new life into this location.

Adding a kids playroom, a brand new menu and their own unique energy has taken the business from strength to strength. Judging by the packed tables and lines for coffee, the locals certainly agree.
